CIRCULATE THIS, Amber Campbell: Community read invites dialogue on homelessness
Libraries are about stories. I'm not just talking about "Cinderella" or "Romeo and Juliet" (although we have those too). I'm talking about stories featuring the mother who stops by the library to access e-mails and photographs from her son stationed in Iraq, or the local author who drops in once or twice a week to edit his latest manuscript, or the girl who made her first cheesecake using a recipe from the back of a Geronimo Stilton book. Stories set in our community.
Tim Toben: Mystic man, he was the Banyan 8.22.2009 : 4:36 pm
PEARSON GARDEN, ASHEVILLE, Wednesday -- Just hours after his passing, Frank's brother Ken spoke from the circle of nearly 200 friends holding hands around the garden. "I think he saw us all as plant beings and he certainly was one himself." Muffled laughter mixed with tears. Frank Cook was the Banyan Tree.

The word, the world at once -- with audio books 8.22.2009 : 4:29 pm
I just learned about a Chapel Hill classroom where fifth-graders listen to audios and walk a nature trail daily. If you want to take in the beauty of the world and the word at the same time, here are a few suggestions.

OUR ROOTS, Ernest Dollar: When the common becomes uncommon 8.22.2009 : 4:20 pm
Traveling north on Martin Luther King Boulevard, one might notice a small, brown house set upon a slight rise in a grove of ancient oaks opposite the intersection of Westminster Drive. It is not a particularly striking house, but for the Preservation Society of Chapel Hill, it is the object of a major preservation effort.

Gary D. Gaddy: Talking health care reform in Carrboro 8.20.2009 : 6:10 pm
Last Tuesday night I was having a drink on the patio outside Panzanella in Carr Mill Mall following a meeting at Club Nova intended to help the board catch a new vision of the future of a great organization. I have the privilege of serving on the board of this program, which works with people with severe and persistent disabilities. The other board members are very smart, well-educated and earnestly caring people; how I got on this board, I have no idea.

Ronald E. Bogle: Alcohol use rises among girls, young women 8.20.2009 : 6:01 pm
A dramatic increase in alcohol abuse among female teens and young adults has been confirmed. Once thought to be primarily an immature male activity, many females, proving alcohol's addictive and non-discriminatory nature, are joining in reckless, abusive and destructive drinking.
