DURHAM - Mr. Erik Anthony Coore, age 41, of 4012 Bristlewood Drive, passed away Monday, June 22, 2009. He was born in New York City. but made his home in North Carolina for over 20 years. He worked in retail and served his country in the United States Air Force.

Erik was the adopted son of Cleveland and Mary Coore. Surviving are his sister, Latisha Coore; brother, Orlando Coore; and niece, Sasha Hewitt, all of New York.

Erik was considered family in every sense of the word by James and Tina Bumgarner. He will be missed by those of us he shared his life with including Tina Marie, Jessica and Jalyn, who thought of him as grandpa, and friends, Fran and Josh Bumgarner, and Jon Dianis.

A celebration of Erik's life will be held Sunday, at his home from 1 to 6 p.m. All friends and family are welcome. Let's do it big for E!!

COSTA
OXFORD - Josephine Mary Costa, 79, a resident of 2677 Deer Run Road, died Wednesday, June 24 at Duke Medical Center. She was of the Catholic faith and a retired bookkeeper.

Surviving are two sisters, Anna Hentze and Mae Blackburn.

A private service is planned.

Eakes Funeral home in Oxford is in charge of arrangements.

DAWSON
CHAPEL HILL - Myrtle Elizabeth Davis Dawson, 98, a longtime resident of Chapel Hill and the Antioch Church community, died at her home on Tuesday, June 23, 2009. She was the oldest daughter of the late Abram Wade Davis and Rachel Maxwell Davis. Myrtle was one of seven who grew up on the family farm that bordered the Cape Fear River in Bladen County. When she was sixteen years old, her mother, along with her children, temporarily moved to Chapel Hill so they could be near Myrtle's only brother while he attended the University of North Carolina. When the family returned to the farm, Myrtle remained behind and eventually married Eugene Wesley Dawson who died in 1986.

Together they ran the family real estate business, while she became known as an excellent cook and accomplished seamstress. She was a faithful member of Antioch Baptist Church. She served in many capacities, from 1955 to 1990, she was a member of Extension Homemakers Club and served as their president for four years as well as County President for two years.

She is survived by her daughter, Sheila Dawson Sturdivant and husband, Jimmy, of Chatham County; her son, Ronald Eugene Dawson and wife, Gloria, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; four grandchildren, Michael Wesley Sturdivant and wife, Margaret, of Chatham County, Kimberly Sturdivant McCown and husband,, Thomas, of Chapel Hill,, John Wesley Dawson and wife, Kimberly, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; and Jason Eugene Dawson of West Palm Beach, Florida; four great-grandchildren,, Wesley and Laura Beth Sturdivant, Rachel McCown and Justin Dawson. She is also survived by her youngest sister, Jewel Kozak of Tampa, Florida; and a number of nieces and nephews. She would also want us to mention "Flucie" her cat and close companion for the past 10 years.

She held the honor of being the oldest member at Antioch Baptist Church where her funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 27 at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at the home on Old Greensboro Road. Those considering memorial contributions may make them to Antioch Baptist Church Building Fund, 1707 White Cross Road, Chapel Hill 27516 or to the charity of your choice.

The family extends its appreciation to her caregivers, Mildred Perry and Clara McLeod.

DEWAR
DURHAM - Mrs. Dawn Hurst Dewar, died Wednesday evening in Croasdaile Pavillion.

She had lived most of her life in Durham and was a member of Lakewood Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son, James H. Dewar; two daughters, Miriam Atwater and Patricia Roberts.

Graveside funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2009, at 2 p.m. in Maplewood Cemetery, section 17.

Memorials may be made to Duke Home Care and Hospice, 4321 Medical Park Dr., Durham, NC 27704.

FRINK
DURHAM - Funeral services for Ms. Vanessa Ann Jones Frink will be held on Monday, June 29, 2009 at 12 p.m. at Faith Assembly Christian Center, 3120 Fayetteville Street, Durham. Interment will follow in Beechwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 11 a.m. at the church.

She is survived by two brothers, James N. Jones and Willie L. Jones; two sisters, Angela Nixon and Faith Edwards.

DURHAM - Funeral services for Mr. Sherman Harris will be held on Monday, June 29, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Scarborough and Hargett Funeral Home Chapel, 306 South Roxboro Street, Durham. Interment will follow in Harris Cemetery, Rougemont. The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 28, 2009 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the chapel.

He is survived by his wife, Lillie A. Harris; sons, Sherman Harris Jr. and Marcus Harris; daughters, Carolyn Harris, Vanessa Harris, Pamela Harris, Felicia Harris and Teresa Harding; brothers, Clarence Harris and Eddie Harris; sisters, Margaret Burton and Lucille Cates.

LANTZ
CREEDMOOR - John G. Lantz, 71, a resident of 2010 Baptist Road, Durham, died Wednesday, June 24 at Wake Medical Center.

He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and retired as a heavy duty operator.

Memorial funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the Eakes Funeral Chapel by the Rev. John Rigsbee.

Surviving are two sisters, Ruby Ferguson and Mary Williams.

Visitation is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday evening at the Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor.

NIERLING
DURHAM - Ruth Mixon Nierling, 97, passed away at The Forest at Duke retirement center in Durham, NC on June 24, 2009. The daughter of Henrietta Charlotte Davis and William F.S. Forsberg, she was born on October 25, 1911, in New London, Connecticut. She lived in Iowa as a young girl and attended high school in Edenton, NC. She married Benjamin Harrell Mixon on September 9, 1936, and lived thereafter in Henderson where Harrell had a large construction business. They both enjoyed golf, and Ruth was very active in the First Methodist Church, first as a Sunday School teacher and later as a leader of the MYF high school students. She was an enthusiastic gardener and bridge player and also loved classical music.

After Harrell's untimely death in 1952, Ruth worked at the Henderson Library, the E.M. Rollins Junior High School library, and the Henderson Daily Dispatch, the local newspaper. As someone passionate about education and continuing to learn throughout life, she enjoyed spending a year taking courses at UNC-Chapel Hill. She loved literature, always sought new approaches to old ideas, and had an innate curiosity about people, places, and things that remained throughout her life.

Ruth moved to Durham in 1963 and worked until 1969 for the president of Duke University. She began watercolor painting at age 62 and continued until she was 93. She was a member of the Durham Arts Council and the North Carolina Watercolor Society and attended several national workshops.

When Ruth married Donald Ellwood Nierling on December 20, 1982, she moved to Morehead City, NC, where they enjoyed golf and bridge in their retirement years. After he died in 1995, she returned to the Durham area to be near family. She lived the rest of her life at The Forest and especially appreciated the excellent care she received after moving to the assisted living/skilled nursing wing. Her family is extremely grateful to the wonderful nurses and staff who attended to her in her final months.

Ruth is survived by her son Ben Mixon and his wife Polly of Durham, daughter Charlotte Corbridge of Boulder, Colorado, daughter Susan Parris of Goldsboro, NC, five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She will be fondly remembered for her enthusiasm for learning new things, her love of books, and her laugh and sense of humor.

The family will receive visitors at the Forest at Duke, 2701 Pickett Rd. in Durham at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 28. A private burial will take place at a later date.

STEELE
DURHAM - Mrs. Dorothy K. Steele, 85, died Thursday morning at Select Specialty Hospital, in Durham. She retired from Crum and Forster Insurance Company.

Mrs. Steele is survived by a daughter, Susan Steele McGhee.

Graveside funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the Masonic Home for Children, 600 College St., Oxford, NC 27565.

The family is being assisted in Durham by Clements Funeral Service, Inc.

STEGALL
WARRENTON - Tommy Wayne "Stump" Stegall, 58, died Friday, June 26, 2009.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, 2009 at Blaylock Funeral Home with burial to follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, June 27, 2009 at Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton.

WELLS
DURHAM - Mrs. Mildred Kelly Lawrence Wells, 96, peacefully passed away on Thursday, June 25, 2009, which was her 96th birthday.

She was born Mildred Kelly on June 25, 1913, the first child of H.O. Kelly Sr. and Adelia Kelly of Apex. She grew up in the edge of Chatham County, graduated from Apex High School, and attended Meredith College. She married Eugene W. Lawrence Sr., with whom she had five children. After Eugene Lawrence's death, she later married Russell L. Wells, with whom she lived in Fayetteville, until shortly before his death, then she moved to Durham. For several years preceding her death, she lived at her daughter's home in Roxboro.

During her 96 years, she never met a stranger, and never hesitated to share a smile and pleasant words of support to everyone she knew. She will be kindly remembered and missed by all those who received the benefit of her sincere concern and prayers, and especially her children, for whom she gave a lifetime of unconditional love. Ms. Wells enjoyed the kindness and fellowship extended by her Sunday School Class at the Triple Springs Baptist Church in Roxboro.

She was predeceased by her husbands, Eugene W. Lawrence Sr. and Russell L. Wells, and her eldest son, Dr. Eugene W. Lawrence Jr. She is survived by her children, Sarah Childers and husband, Ken, of Roxboro, Elizabeth Gunselman and husband, Dan, of Durham, Andrew Lawrence and wife, Lou Ann Lawrence, of Raleigh, Steven Lawrence and wife, Georgiann Lawrence, of Fayetteville; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Lawrence, of Franklin. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters, Hunter Kelly of Durham, H.O. Kelly Jr. and wife, Mary, of Apex, Jane Monroe and husband, Thad, of Chapel Hill, Hellen Nyimicz and husband, Dan, of Macon, Ga., and Merrill Kelly of Alexandria, Va.; and by 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.

The family would also like to give a special thanks to Frances Short and Cynthia Fuqua of Roxboro, for the friendship and loving care that they provided Ms. Wells in her final years. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 28, 2009, at Olive Chapel Baptist Church, 600 New Hill Olive Chapel Road, in Apex.
