DUNN

OXFORD - Leonard M. Dunn, 84, a resident of 108 Halifax Street, died Tuesday, June 30, at Brantwood Nursing Center. he was the son of the late Otha Dunn and Ella Jordan Dunn of Wake Forest.
The son of a carpenter, he attended a school built by black parents (prior to 1941 North Carolina only provided blacks and education through seventh grade). He and his sister were the first in his family to attend a public high school, Dubois High School in Wake Forest, where he graduated valedictorian. After a tour of duty in the United States Army he graduated summa cum laude in 1949 from A&T College, Greensboro, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Architectural Engineering with a concentration in education. In 1955 he received a master's degree in Rural Education also from A&T College.
In 1950 he began his career as a math teacher at Toler High School in northern Granville County. He would later serve as principal. He devoted 18 years to Toler High School. He would then be transferred to J.F. Webb High School and there he would serve as assistant principal for over 20 years. He retired in 1988 with 40 years of service with the Granville County School system.
His students fondly remember him saying - "Love many, Trust few. Learn to paddle your own canoe."
He was a 50 year member of Hester-Crews post #66 of the American Legion where he was a leader and promoter of its "Oratorical Contest" which builds speaking talents in the youth. He was also a 50 year member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. There he was proud to support its "Talent Hunt", which identifies and promotes classical musical skills in voice and piano among our youth. He was a member of the Orange Street Community Center's board of director's and he would attend aerobic classes three times a week at the Senior Center. He was a dedicated member of St. Peter's United Methodist Church where he was superintendant of Sunday school and chairman of the Church Council. He taught Bible study classes every Wednesday for the last 13 years. He was proud of his membership in the National Dubois Alumni Association that oversees a 20-acre National Historic Site in southeast Wake Forest.
He is survived by a daughter, Patrice Dunn of the home; a vast number of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, caring friends, co-workers, former students and church members. He was also preceded in death by two wives, who were also educators, Beonia Edwards Dunn and Geraldine Edwards Dunn; and six siblings.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, July 9, at 1 p.m. at Wright Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Christopher Diggs. Burial will be in Plummer-Cheatham Cemetery.
The family will receive visitors Wednesday from 7 until 9 p.m. at Wright Funeral Home.

SANFORD - Margaret Blake Foushee, 87 of Sanford died Wednesday July 1, 2009 at Central Carolina Hospital. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday July 8 at First Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Foushee retired from Justin-Sanford Brick Company.

SANFORD - Kate Lasater Helms, 91 of Southern Pines died Wednesday July 1, 2009 at Penick Village. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Jonesboro Cemetery. The family will greet friends at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the cemetery.
She taught in High Point, Wilson, Southern Pines, and Kassel, Germany.
Ms. Helms is survived by two sisters, Mary Alice Harden and Frances H. Gantt.

SANFORD - Jerry L. Jackson, 53, of Sanford died Thursday at Central Carolina Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday July 6, 2009 at Rogers Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow at Buffalo Cemetery.
Mr. Jackson is survived by one son, Richard Jackson; one brother, Johnny Jackson.
The family will receive friends from 12 until 2 p.m. Monday at Rogers-Pickard Funeral Home prior to the funeral service.

HIGH POINT - Mattie May McGhee Jones, age 87, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2009 at High Point Regional Hospital.
Formerly of Durham, she had resided in High Point for the past six years and was a resident of the Presbyterian Home of High Point. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jonie T. Jones, in 2003. She was a charter member of Cresset Baptist Church in Durham.
Survivors include daughter, Janice J. Kirkland and husband, Milton, of High Point; son, Joff Jones and wife, Deb Hermann, of Weehawken, N.J.; granddaughter, Cynthia Webb and husband, Monte; grandsons, Paul Kirkland and wife, Amy, Scott Kirkland and wife, Joanna; great-grandchildren, T.J. Webb, Tilley Grace Kirkland, Ada Margaret Kirkland, Elliott Kirkland and Campbell Kirkland, all of High Point.
Graveside service, led by the Rev. Jon Glass, will be held Monday, July 6, 2009 at 10 a.m. at Maplewood Cemetery in Durham.
The family will receive visitors Sunday, July 5, 2009 from 2 until 5 p.m. at the home of Janice and Milton Kirkland.

MEBANE - Mrs. Marie Abernathy Murphy, 93, died Friday, July 3, 2009. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School. Surviving is her son, Jim Murphy.

DURHAM - Willie 'Granny' Myers, 89, went to be with our Savior and her best friend and husband, Lester, on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at the Hock Family Pavilion.
Left to cherish Granny's memory are three brave sons, Vance Myers, Curtis Myers and Tom Myers.

TIMBERLAKE - John Charles Post, 44, of Timberlake, suffered a heart attack on July 2, 2009 and died shortly after at Durham Regional Hospital.
He served in the army and was stationed in Korea and Colorado. John was employed in the field of telecommunication design and installation most recently at Lan-Line of Raleigh.
John is survived by his wife of 17 years, Michele S. Post; and daughter, Kathleen Margaret Bigelow Post; his brother, Scott Post.
After donations to the Eye Bank and Carolina Donor Services, John's remains have been trusted to Clements Funeral Home in Durham for cremation. Donations should be sent to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Visitation will be held at Clements Funeral Home, 1105 Broad Street, Durham, on Monday, July 6, from 7 to 9 p.m.

DURHAM - Earl Lamar Radford, 77, of Sparger Road died Friday, July 3 at Duke Medical Center. He was predeceased by his mother, Blanche Radford Forrest, father, Troy Radford and sister, Doris Rackley.
He was born in Wayne County, graduated from Goldsboro High School in 1951 and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was awarded two purple hearts for wounds received during that time. He attended Duke University School of Radiology Technology. After graduation he was employed in the Department of Radiology at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Durham for 35 years, retiring in 1987. He was a long time member of Asbury United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Marvin Reep Sunday School Class. He was an avid N.C. State Wolfpack fan ' especially their football program, as well as a lifelong New York Yankee fan.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Deane Weeks Radford. Also surviving are two sons, David L. Radford and wife, Brenda, of Durham, Steve Radford of Wake Forest; and daughter, Robin R. King and husband, Rod, of Durham. Surviving are six grandchildren, Ashleigh R. Dippolito and husband, Brett, of Benson, Michael Radford and Caitlin King of Durham, Joshua, Jacob and Amanda Radford of Wake Forest; and one great-grandchild, Ryan Dippolito of Benson. A sister, Mildred Radford Cathey and husband, Cliff, of Tampa, Florida; and several nieces and nephews and extended family members also survive him.
Visitation will be held Sunday, July 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home, Durham. Services will be held Monday, July 6, at 11 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, Durham. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. The Reverend Martha McLean and The Reverend Leonard Doucette will officiate. Pallbearers will be Michael Radford, Joshua Radford, Clarence Hill, Bob Hinton, Randy Bell and Jimmy Pulley. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Marvin Reep Sunday School Class.
