OK, here we have it -- the latest in the "what were they thinking?" episodes of public officials.
Mark Sanford, the Republican governor of our neighboring state of South Carolina, seemed destined for even greater things, perhaps even a run for president. His latest gambit, a campaign to see if he could refuse federal stimulus money for the Palmetto State, was quixotic but, nonetheless, principled.

It has been nearly a week since news surfaced that an inmate died at the Orange County Jail, but, remarkably, Sheriff Lindy Pendergrass has yet to make a public statement about the jarring news. As is often his approach on high-profile matters that justifiably capture the community's interest, the sheriff becomes reclusive at the very time the public looks to him for answers or, at the very least, an indication that the situation is getting every attention it deserves.

DURHAM — A cluster of trees and the sound of traffic whizzing by on the Durham Freeway camouflage the history of a block of Humphrey Street in East Durham, once called Glenn Street. The street was chopped in half when what was then called the East-West Expressway came through the Bull City in 1968. For Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, it meant they had to move over to 2200 S.
