NCCU tuition may increase 3.1%
Durham -- N.C. Central University students could see tuition and fee increases in fiscal year 2009-10. On Tuesday, the university's board of trustees' finance committee recommended a 3.1 percent increase in undergraduate tuition and a 6 percent increase in student fees.

Historic buildings get new look thanks to residents' investments
DURHAM -- Light streams through two giant windows into a loft apartment across from the SunTrust building in downtown. Inside, a safe dating from 1880 sits there, too heavy to move during a recent renovation, and owner Scott Donner says playfully: "It could be a wet bar maybe? That would be really great to have."

Durham gas prices still higher than others
DURHAM -- As the price of oil has plunged, so has the price of gas. But the average price in Durham remains higher than in nearby cities such as Greensboro and Raleigh.

Ground broken for South Regional Library
DURHAM -- A rebirth of sorts took place Tuesday afternoon by the old Lowe's Grove school. Durham County library and government leaders gathered on a cold, blustery day in a field by N.C. 54 and Alston Avenue to break ground for a new library. When it is finished in mid-2010, South Regional Library will serve as a common gathering place for the Lowe's Grove and Parkwood neighborhoods -- two of Southern Durham's most established communities in one of the county's fastest developing areas.

DURHAM -- A divided City Council this week gave a developer permission to add to an office-and-retail project next to Interstate 40 near Southpoint even though part of it will stand in a floodplain.

DURHAM -- A unanimous City Council on Monday authorized City Manager Tom Bonfield to open negotiations to transfer ownership of West Point on the Eno to the state.

DURHAM -- City officials put the finishing touches on and approved a plan Monday for the Ninth Street area that will shape upcoming zoning and ordinance changes to support development there.
Cousin believes board can reach chair consensus
DURHAM -- Departing commissioners Lewis Cheek and Philip Cousin Jr. wouldn't comment Monday about board leadership for 2008-09.
