DURHAM -- Lawyers for the city have joined Duke University in arguing that a new U.S. Supreme Court ruling should prompt the dismissal of all or most of the civil rights claims stemming from the Duke lacrosse case.

Officer still stable at hospital after shooting
DURHAM -- A Durham police officer shot in the stomach while answering a call Thursday remained in stable condition at Duke University Hospital on Friday, according to police reports.

Fast-moving cyclists pedal up angst on Tobacco Trail
DURHAM -- According to Bill Ross, the accident could have easily been avoided.
Ross and his wife, Ann Strandberg, were finishing a Sunday bike ride on the American Tobacco Trail when a group of cyclists on racing bikes approached from behind. Although they did not make physical contact with the couple and used proper etiquette to announce that they were passing, Ross and Strandberg went down when they swerved to avoid the cyclists, who were moving about 25 miles per hour.

Roxboro St. One of the region's premiere Independence Day celebrations features exhibits, displays, arts, crafts and live entertainment on the banks of the Eno River to benefit efforts to preserve this beautiful natural area.

DURHAM -- Congressional leaders have signaled that they want to change the rules governing the distribution of transit subsidies in a way that among other things could help Triangle communities get a commuter-rail system going.

Council backs Obama's health care reform program
DURHAM -- A request from the White House prompted Mayor Bill Bell and the City Council to go on record recently as favoring "immediate enactment" of the Obama administration's health care reform program.

Elections filings to open Monday
DURHAM -- Four city council positions will be on the ballot in this year's city municipal elections.
The posts include the mayor and council member positions from Wards I, II, III. All candidates are required to file a notice of candidacy and pay a filing fee. Candidate filing will be held at the Board of Elections office beginning Monday at 8:30 a.m. and ending at noon Friday.

DOT suspends road work
RALEIGH -- The N.C. Department of Transportation has suspended most road construction activities over the Independence Day holiday weekend.
Most construction projects along interstates, N.C. and U.S. routes are suspended until 9 a.m., Tuesday, with four exceptions.
